5 Key Considerations When Evaluating Translation Management Software

shutterstock_314249534The way content is created and distributed is constantly changing, so why do some organizations insist on maintaining the status quo with their translation and content localization process?

In a recent webinar titled, “Globalizing and Localizing Your Content Strategy in Adobe Experience Manager,” Smartling’s Matt DeLoca, VP of Channels & Alliances and Andrew Saxe, VP of Product at Smartling, detailed the benefits of implementing modern translation management software.

In case you missed it, below are five key considerations organizations should look for when evaluating translation management systems (TMS):

Native support

Content is created in a number of different platforms and file formats, so to ensure a seamless experience – for both content creators and translators alike –  translation management software should integrate easily with or within those platforms. This will mitigate the need for stakeholders to learn new systems, and virtually eliminates potential bottlenecks as the translation and review process is now automated.

Open APIs

As technology evolves, having the ability to create custom integrations with new systems and platforms is essential. Selecting a TMS with an open API will give you the flexibility needed to quickly respond to advances in technology that could be added to your tech stack in the future.

Customizable workflows

Since there is no cookie-cutter approach to translation management, it’s important to be able to create customized workflows that allow you to automate as much of the translation process as possible. Each of your content types requires different steps, including review processes, sign-offs, etc.

With customizable workflows, you can create as many translation, quality review, and approval steps as you need – from simple ‘translate → review → publish’ workflows, to more complicated workflows requiring subject matter experts and discussions over multiple approval cycles and legal review.

Powerful translator tools

Modern translation management software should also include a robust set of tools to improve the speed and quality of translation. These tools should consist of:

  • Fully contextual interfaces, showing stakeholders how translated content will look
  • Translation memory and fuzzy matching, which grow in value and performance with use
  • Issue management tools, such as in-platform communication, escalation, and resolution
  • Integrated spell check, glossary, and style guides, updated and available in real-time

Flexible translation options

Your choice of translators shouldn’t be limited based on the TMS vendor you selected. Your software vendor should be focused on delivering an automated, seamless experience to your translators and not concern itself with what translation resources or language service provider you are working with.
